Promoting Safer Chemistry

We’re delivering safer materials for our producers and clients alike. Green chemistry is a key focus at Ultrafabrics, to ensure we’re managing and mitigating possible environmental and health impacts and supporting a healthy future for the textiles industry.

In addition to assessing Ultrafabrics products to semi-annual REACH updates to ensure they meet and/or exceed the criteria, all of our collections are free of the following restricted substances:

  • - Bisphenol A (BPA)
  • - Conflict Minerals
  • - Flame Retardants (except for aviation, automotive, or when requested by customer)
  • - Heavy Metal Stabilizers
  • - PFOA (Perfluorooctanoic Acid)
  • - Plasticizer Phthalates
  • - POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants)
  • - PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)

Evolving with people and planet in mind, we began transitioning away from PFOA over two years, ultimately removing it from all Breathable Technology styles, which includes Brisa, Brisa Distressed Brisa Frontier, Brisa Forecast, and Fresco. The removal of PFOA also allows for Brisa and Brisa Distressed styles to now comply with Health Care Without Harms Healthy Interiors Safer Chemical Challenge.

We have reviewed the Living Building Challenge Red List, and Ultrafabrics products do not contain any Red List chemicals, with the exceptions of Ultraleather Pro, Reef Pro, and collections suitable for outdoor use.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, better known as PFAS, are synthetic chemical compounds typically used for water and stain resistance. Studies have linked PFAS, which includes compounds like PFOA and PFOS, with a range of harmful effects on both human and environmental health. Many states and countries, including Japan, where our manufacturing headquarters is based, have adopted a ban on PFOA following the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs).

Today, 90% of our open-line portfolio is PFAS-free. By 2025, all products stored and sold in the US will be PFAS-free, and by 2027 all products sold globally will be PFAS-free.

Evolving with people and planet in mind, we’ve completed our transition away from PFOA in 2022. The removal of PFOA also allows for over a dozen of our collections to now comply with Health Care Without Harm’s Healthy Interiors Safer Chemical Challenge.
Moving Forward

We are constantly working on next-generation innovation to deliver better materials for manufacturers and end-users alike. We are proud to create fabrics that are safe for all and will continue to seek out viable alternatives that maintain our high standards while minimizing the use of harmful substances.
