On a walk in New York City’s Soho neighborhood last week, we stopped in our tracks to see a giant billboard featuring Apple’s newest color: alpine green. The blown-up photo was very simple, depicting a single, green iPhone standing front and center. “I need that color!” was our immediate reaction. The deep, lustrous shade of green had us transfixed; Apple’s advertising team had done its job.
As deftly illustrated by this Soho billboard, color is paramount to consumer preferences. According to Laurie Pressman, vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, color accounts for up to 85% of purchasing decisions. And, right now, Apple isn’t alone in using green to its advantage. From the tech world to interior design to fashion, green is the color of the moment.
Rejuvenation, healthfulness, and serenity are just a few feelings that green conjures. While yellowy greens promote playfulness and vibrancy, jewel-tone greens communicate elegance and luxury. Etsy’s trend expert, Dayna Isom Johnson, says that green is the epitome of “Lagom,” a concept that ‘translates to not too much, not too little…just the right amount.’
Perhaps this is why Etsy has named emerald-green its color of the year for 2022. The company has noted that recent searches for emerald-green items are up by 64%, and searches for décor of the same shade are up 60%. Johnson has explained, ‘symbolizing harmony and growth, along with royalty and refinement, emerald-green is the perfect color to remind us to find balance this year.’

While Etsy’s accent pieces make their way onto our tables, green is also making a comeback on our walls. Virtually every major paint brand has named the shade as one to watch this year; green dominated the 2022 forecasting reports of PPG, Sherwin Williams, and Behr alike. Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams, observed, ‘I love Sherwin Williams’s Color of the Year, Evergreen Fog, for a bathroom because it helps the room feel like an at-home spa.’
